Forwarding problems
« on: November 04, 2005, 05:33:00 AM »
My client is running SME Server 6.0.1-01 and is experiencing problems with emails being forwarded. Here's the scenario. All mail comes into one of their SME boxes in Perth, WA. Some users have forwarding on their accounts to a corresponding account on their other SME box in NSW. This forwarding has, in the past couple of weeks, stopped working. Not knowing a great deal about SME/Linux the only way of getting the mail forwarded for a particular account was to remove then reapply the forwarding. Apart from pi$$ing off users there's a more serious problem. User accounts have been set up that forward to distribution groups (don't ask why it's been done like this, I haven't a clue). For example, users send timesheets to, say, wages@abc.com that has a forward to group1@abc.com (then on to the members of that group). Clearly if the forwarding isn't working timesheets are not arriving and users are not being paid. Not good.

Anyway, why is the forwarding periodically failing and how can I stop it happening?

Hope someone can help.

TIA

I have had this problem also but have found by changing
the setting in the user panel from

DELIVER EMAIL LOCAL and FORWARD

to just

DELIVER EMAIL to FORWARD "only"

all emails work fine for some reason with this setting found 734 old emails to webmaster had not been forwarded

Thanks for that. I'll give it a try.

Curious though that their setup worked without a problem for about 3 years then the forwarding failed twice in 2 weeks

if spamassassin on the sme then it will break your forwarding. SA sends all the mail through procmail filters first then to the inbox and by-passes the FORWARD ONLY area in the default sme-email-page.

changing the settings is only a temporary fix as the files will be re-written the next time SA updates.

Interesting! So is there any way of making sure the forwarding works? Disable SA altogether (get another spam filter perhaps)? This might go some way to explain why SA was set not to update at all (not my doing either).

You mention forward only. Does the other forwarding option, keeping a local copy work?

Thanks
