External, Internal pop3 access to e-smith ?
« on: November 29, 2001, 10:07:49 AM »
I ahve a permanent connection to the Internet. The e-smith box is behind a ADSL router with a public IP address. I can access this box from the Internet using Telnet (for admin) and I can ping the box from the internet, there is no "router" firewalling going on with the e-smith.

I have users on an internal network, and mobile users who use an ISP to get on the internet.

What do I have to do to allow internal and "external" pop3 access to my e-smith server.

Regards,

Rodney

External pop3 access is available via setup in the e-smith manager.
Configure the mail readers accordingly with the server's public ip address as the pop and smtp addresses.
They will always be able to receive mail, but unless I'm missing something, the ISP will need to allow for mail relaying in order to send.

For sending mail, instruct your users to use the ISP's SMTP server.  They will not need permission to do so because they are authenticated on the ISP's network.

Set the user's mail client to use your server for POP3/IMAP access and you are done.

I am not using "mail relay".

I want to be my own mail host. The MX record points to my e-smith box. The ISP is only providing the pipe to the internet. External users connected to the internet via dial-up, will have to come down this pipe from the internet to the "public" address of the e-smith box.

I can not get "connectivity" to the e-smith box across the internet, local users are fine.

From "Outlook" I get the following errors...

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'xxx' Server: 'mail.xxx.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'xxx'', Server: 'mail.xxx.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Can anyone shed some light, please ?
