During Install Boot - kernel panic: attempting to kill init!
« on: November 06, 2005, 04:51:38 PM »
I had SME server 6.0.1 installed on my machine for a long time.  It was working great.  At the time, I will using an EIDE Maxtor 250GB harddrive.  Because I wanted RAID 1 protection, I decided to purchase a HighPoint RocketRAID 1520 PCI card and 2-SATA Seagate 250GB harddrives.  The card is supposed to have great Linux support.  I tried installing SME versions: 6.0.1, 6.5RC1, and 7.0beta5.  I got kernel panic errors during the installation boots for all of these versions.  I even tried installing a custom ISO of version 6.0.1 with SATA support.  Prior to the SME boot disk loading, my machine is recognizing my RAID card and two harddrives.  I am so frustated and do not know what to do.  Someone ... please help!

Sorry, you bought the wrong card. If you want to boot from a raid card under SME you'll need to pay the big bucks and get an adaptec card or a similar native card. It has nothing to do with sata drivers and eveything to do with hi-point drivers.

I ran a hi-point card for a while and you'll need to install SME on a single or dual disks as normal and then compile hi-point drivers to run your card. Once you have a set of compiled drivers for your SME version, insmod the drivers and mount the card at /home/e-smith/files/ibays or similar.

Hi-point supply source to compile your own drivers. Read the included DOCs as you'll need to tell the kernel not to probe the card at boot.
