Will SME do what I need?????
« on: November 15, 2005, 05:44:56 AM »
I have dabbled with Linux for some time now, I still have a learning curve, being 53.  So I need an easy system to get setup in my business.  I currently have a Mandrake system serving up an intranet page, I have some PHP pages on it linked to my MySql server showing data.  I am using Samba for file sharing.  I want to have Apache available to my lan and also to my WAN.  I have Static IPs from my ISP.  I use PHPMySql admin to work on my DB.  Will SME do all this?  I have a PF-Sense router serving up my DHCP, PPTP, NAt, etc.  Can all this be incorporated into one modest box?

Thanks

You will need to install that contrib which is available.

Depending on your specific requirements, you may be better to configure the router for bridged mode (if possible) and let the sme server do all that using it's own firewall in server gateway mode, much easier to administer & configure without having seperate router/firewall.

I think you will be happy with sme as it does all you want and more "out of the box".

From a fellow dabbler :hammer:  in the same age group (49) SME can do what you need and is easy to learn and maintain.
Also: You'll find the user community quite responsive and generally not suffering from Linux dogmas. (Refreshing to not see an alternative spelling of Windows in every second post!)

edlenz,

You will be very happy with SME for your purposes.  I have been using it in my office for 3 years under similar useage without a hitch.  I find it EXTREMELY easy to configure and administer.

I also use an add-on called hylafax for receiving about 150 to 200 and sending about 50 faxes per week.  I also have 10 users with high demands on a samba share using mortgage origination software on each workstation.

All of this is performing on a fairly modest machine...Athlon XP1600 with 768 Meg and raid1 IDE 40gig drives.  I had it on a K6 350 for quite a while but it got too slow when I hit around 5 users.

Good Luck

Thanks guys for the feedback.  I installed 7.01 last night and still finding my way around.  Tried to get a php file to work but not yet.  I have a question about the cgi, html, folders in the I-Bay, how do I hide them in a shared folder to the local net?  I can see my users sticking files into those folders and then complaining it is to hard to find them later.
