Connecting to a Windows 2003 Server - Solved
« on: November 18, 2005, 02:48:32 PM »
I have been using SME server for the past three+ years.  Like how easy it is to use as well as the functionality it provides.

Recently I set up some FTP access for some users.  The problem i now have is I would like to connect to a shared folder on a Windows 2003 AD server, where a large number of document files are located.  It is preferable to connect to this share as the documents are updated on this folder and there is a need to access these updates from the Internet.

So, I have tried to run the samba command smbclient -L //WINDOWSSERVERNAME -u USERNAME.  This generates a few lines of responses and then prompts for the USERNAME password.  All is good in the world!  Enter the password and then get the dreaded error "tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED".
The SME Server is a member on the domain, but has not been joined to the domain.

I have searched the web and have been unable to find a resonable answer.  There are some answers that indicate the Guest account on the Windows Server should be enabled.  The registry on the server has been updated as well as the domain policy so there is no sign and seal issues with the SMB protocol.

Does any one have any suggestions?

If I can't get this working in the expected manner, I may have to create an IBAY and work from there.

Hi,

Try using the smbmount command to mount the W2K3 share to a directory under an iBay.

Rememeber, anyone who has access to the iBay will have permissions of the user id that you used to connect to the W2K3 server in the smbmount command.

Not the most elegant solution, but it appears the Windows "Guest" account needs to be active.  At least on Windows 2003.

Enabled the guest account and limited the access to this account to the required folder.
Now able to create a link between the files stored on the Windows Server and the users home folder.

Ideally it would be better to create an IBAY, move all the files to the SME Server and hand out from there, but the Windows box has a large Hardware Raid array.

Thanks for your help,

Darin
