Topic: SME 6.01 Server gateway. No internet access.

I have used SME-server in “server only” mode for 6 months. Now I have decided to try removing my D-link router, and use SME-server as “server gateway”

I have an regular internet account with dynamic IP address. I’m connected through a Motorola surfboard  SB 3100 cable modem.

I have a Via Epia VE5000 with an additional D-link DEF 530-TX net adapter. I made an fresh SME-installation, and everything is working fine on LAN, but clients can’t access the internet.

I have tried to “swap” network Eth0 Eth 1 in instalation, to test both network adapters, and both cards works fine on LAN.

What Is wrong?

Ps. When Win XP clients attempt to access the internet through internet Explorer, I get a “ website was found” message, but after 1 minute it times out. With an “Error 113” or 110.

Log in as admin to the server console and run Test Internet access.

If that doesn't work then something is wrong with your hardware or your main configuration.

Go through the configure this server and check all settings are corect.

Is the modem configured in "bridged" mode ?
ie it should pass all signals straight through.

It clearly shows what you mean by “Test internet access”  My problem is that I only have 5 menu options!

I simply haven’t got the option “Test internet access”.  Why not?

Secondly I’m afraid I don’t know if my modem I in “bridged” mode. I can’t find anything concerning bridged mode using the web interface.

I think that was removed on 6.0.1

From the command prompt try pinging an external website
eg
ping www.google.com

You should get a Reply...... message if the connection works OK.

That is something you would configure using your modem set up program, if it is available as an option.
Check the modem handbook or search the web.


Have you read the sme server handbook for general setup info, see Documentation link ?

The only thing I can change in modem setup is “Enable” / “Disable” DHCP Server.

This has always bin set to “Enable"

Okay!

I tried to install SME-server 6.0, and now I found the “Test internet account” option.

The test failed!

I tried to ping google from a DOS prompt but it timed out.  

I have http access to modem configuration through Sme-server, so I assume that all hardware Is working fine.  

What now?

Ps. I really don’t understand this. My connection works just fine with my D-link router!
In both cases modem starts up fine. Identifying both MAC-address, all status flags is “good” and “on-line”

Hey Polle,
just to check the obvious.

When you made the router to gateway change, did you power cycle the modem to get the new MAC address?

Are you "locked" to the router MAC by your ISP?

Yes I restart the modem every time I change from router to SME-server.

My ISP have delivered the Motorola SB 3100 cable modem. It’s a part of the contract to “borrow” this modem.

When accessing the http modem setup, it actually indicates that MAC address is changing. When accessing with D-Link router connected, its shows the router MAC address.  When accessing through SME-server it shows a different MAC address. (Guess that it is Net adaptor MAC address in SME-box)

The modem is capable of “learning” 5 MAC addresses.

Hey Peter,
when you said the server was working behind the router,
was it accessable from the internet?
Were you hosting a website?

Your network appears to be functioning properly until you switch the router to gateway.
Can I ask you to try an odd suggestion?

1) Shutdown the SME box.
2) Unplug the power to the modem for about 10 minutes.
3) Restart the modem.
4) Then restart the SME box
5) Report yor findings please.

I would think you now want to disable that and allow the sme server to be the DHCP server.

I have a confession to make! I have missed a weary small but important detail  

When I connect to the internet, my ISP have a “log on site”.  On this site you have to login with username and password before you can use the connection.  Of course this isn’t weary practical for certain users to logon every time they turn on their machine.  Therefore my ISP has a “service” called “always on”.

When you use “always on” service it binds the connection to the specific MAC address connected.  ( I my case the D-link  router )

Before you can get a connection with another MAC address, you must go to this web page again and disable “always on” !!!!

It is more than a year since I made this “always on” login, and I have totally forgotten this. As told, I was weary focused on the modem. The modem had already accepted the SME-server MAC address, and “ifconfig” told me that my ISP’s DHCP, already had delivered a WAN IP ect.

Anyway the connection was still “in use”  or what you call it, by my routers MAC address.

Sorry that I missed that detail….



On the positive site. Im now connected with SME-server. In the next hours I will try altering some local IP’s, and setup users, I-bays ect.

I have done this before in “server only mode” so I expect no problems.

If any problems it’s nice to know that help I near in this forum
