Game Server on SME ?
« on: November 30, 2005, 03:20:18 AM »
Anyone here running a game server on thier sme box? What games work best if so?

My younger brother visits from time to time and most times we jump on the net and play online shooters like CS or Unreal 2003. I also sometimes have mini lans with friends. I figure why have to setup a game server on someones machine every time when I have a nix box that I should try.

Plus Im trying to streamline my network and get rid of extra machines (like migrating all my files off my windows file server onto the sme server eventually.

I mostly want a counterstrike server. I have found a generic linux install off the Steam site but isnt working ... I was a little tired when I attempted it as I had a drive fail on the wifes machine so I had to get it back up and running first. Is it worth the effort to set up a attempt to use the sme server as a game server or should I just take an old windows machine and use it?

Ps my current machine is a 600mzh 80 gig hd 256 ram.

...or it means some people think you _could_ use
"Search Site" on the upper right  8-)
 8-)
Do not forget "Show all results".

Seriously: SME 6.x is RH7.3
If you find a game (-server) for that ... it should work

I ran a BF1942 server for a while, never missed a beat.  Tried it after the Win dedicated server kept crashing.
AMD duron 800, 512 RAM.  Ran 48 player COOP no probs

Even set up a BF2 server in one of the 7aphla's until I realised how good the offical ranked servers were.

Hi,

I’ve been running UT2004 and Quake3Arena servers for almost 2 years – runs great.

The UT2004 Server is the easiest to administrate as there is a webgui on the server.

Check out http://www.unrealadmin.org/ where there are generators for ini files and there are also some guides for setting up servers e.g.:http://wiki.unrealadmin.org/Server_Setup_%28UT2004%29

For quake and other games see http://gameadmins.com/modules.php?name=Sections
