To paraphrase Voltaire, if SME didn't exist, it would have to be invented.  There are distributions such as ClarkConnect and IPCop whose functions overlap the SME Server's in various ways, and yes, you can take any flavor of Linux and make a server of it ... but there really isn't anything comparable to SME Server for ease of installation and simplicity of administration.  File server, router/gateway and email server, running happily on very modest hardware -- a true boon for small businesses and organizations.

Hey beakersloco,
if there wasn't an SME available there would be 2 boxes sitting in my office.

First box would be one of the Linux gateway O/S'es like m0n0wall, Smoothwall, IPCop etc. doing the "guard duty" for the network.

Behind the "guard" would be either a FreeBSD or one of the Redhat( or Redhat variants) serving up the website and e-mail etc.

SME makes a very smooth and powerful mix of the above needs. It's free, has a small, tight community and it is built like a "brick poophouse".
Good luck
Joe
