Install error - on configure mouse

Install error - on configure mouse

Install runs smoothly up to the point where it tries to run a script to
configure the mouse.

The blue installation screen flashes a message along the lines of
cannot find xxxxxx (It goes by too quickly to read)
and then halts on 'An error occured during step Configure mouse'

On Alt F3 the console has : running /usr/sbin.mouseconfig
                                                * tool failed

I cannot execute any of the options on the menu at that point and the install
aborts.

There is no folder /usr/sbin either on the cd or hdd.

I have tried two different CD ROM drives in case it is a read error and
have created two boot disks, one from the ftp site : e-smith-3.1-diskette.img
and the second from the cd : /images/boot.img

Both installs give the same error.

I am running RH61 quite successfully on this exact machine and tried
installing e-smith on to a new 4.3gb HDD I hooked up (single hdd)

Furthermore I tried installing to a completely different PC with the same error.

Could it be that the CD is not correct?
I used Adaptec Easy CD Deluxe 3.5 to burn from the iso image.

I am fairly sure the download was successful since the sizes match your
checksums.
The iso image expanded and was burned onto a CD (Twice)

I did follow a thread in your discussion group where someone else had the same error.
The suggestion was to check the case of the CD folders. These seem fine.

Hello Sasha,

Is this e-smith 3.0/3.1 you are using? It sounds like for some reason the kickstart installer is trying to configure the mouse. The kickstart file sets the mouse type to "none" and in almost all cases that works. I'm not sure why it's having trouble in your case.

Do you have a mouse lying around? I suspect if you plug in a mouse - either serial or PS/2 the install may get past the mouseconfig part.

Let us know what happens! Good luck and best regards,

You should use the first of those boot disks, and double check that your system is booting from floppy and not from CDROM.

As Joseph says, the scripted installation should expect mouse type of "none", so should breeze through that step of the installation without probing any hardware.

It is e-smith 3.1 and the system is booting from the floppy. The cd is not bootable,
I have tried that as well.

On both systems I have tried using no mouse, a  Microsoft PS2 and a serial mouse
and in all instances it gives the same error.

The one motherboard is an older socket 7 ASUS board with standard keyboard and
two serial ports. The second system is a new type board with ps2 keyboard and mouse as well as dual serial. The problem is identical on both, so I doubt if it is a
hardware related issue.
It seems the installer is not able to find the file /usr/sbin/mouseconfig

Any new ideas? I really need to get this system running.

Hello Sasha,

Now I am starting to suspect your CD is bad. We've installed on many machines without getting this error, so my first theory was that there is something unusual about your computer. But if you get the same error on different computers, that suggests the CD is not correct.

You mentioned that the iso image was burned onto a CD twice. What do you mean exactly by that? Do you mean that you made two different CDs and they both fail?

Best regards,
- Joe

I created two different CD's one using Easy CD 3.5 and another using
Easy CD 4.
For the second disk I even expanded the gz file afresh in case
the first iso was badly expanded. I assume that Winzip is capable of extracting the
.gz archive correctly.
What bothers me is that although the Adaptec app was quite happy to create the
CD's both times, I tried using CDRWIN and it complained that the size of the iso
file was not a correct multiple of sector sizes and would not create the cd.

This also makes me suspect that the CD is dud, but it is a very strange way for
the error to be manifested !

I want to order the original from you, but would prefer to wait for V4. When do
you expect to ship this version ?

Hello Sasha,

4.0 will come out in February some time, although we don't have an exact release date yet.

Best regards,

That would be the nub of it.

/usr/sbin/mouseconfig should be installed on your hard drive
when the installer installs the mouseconfig-3.9-1.i386.rpm.
If there is a problem installing the RPM, this should be logged on the install screen. There is also a full log of the install process in the file /tmp/install.log.

During the installation process, you can access a shell using Alt-F2. If you time things right, you might be able to type:

ls -l /mnt/usr/sbin

and see if you spot mouseconfig.

I still suspect the CD, but it's certainly an unusual failure mode.

It is the CD !

I downloaded a new iso image and created a new CD with CDRWin

It worked perfectly. The server installed within a few minutes and is running fine.
I am still strying to get the modem to dial, but I will contact you if I dont succeed.

Is there any special setting other than the coms port and selecting dial up server ?

Thank you for the great support and prompt replies.

Kind regards
Sasha

Sasha,

You may also want to download and preview the user's guide.  (Since partly you are reviewing the technology as a solution to implement with your customers, the manual would be part of the package your customer sees).

I'm glad you worked out the issue with the CDR.

Cheers,

Kim
