IMAP timeouts

Hello All.  I have posted on this problem in the last month, but have not found a solution in all of the replies to my post.

In a nutshell, I have an SME server (PIII, 768MB RAM, RAID5 array) running 6x.  It is behind a Sonic Systems firewall (I don't recommend that product!) and connects to a remote office over a 768K pipe.

I often have Outlook users get timeouts connecting to the server.  I have tried increasing the timeout value, and many other tricks people posted to assist in solving the problem.  It occurs very intermittently, and when it happens, running top on the server shows a machine that is hardly getting taxed at all.  The logs sown nothing out of the ordinary (that I can tell)

In the last month of experiencing this problem I have noticed a few things.  It seems that the only users that have this problem are the 20 or so Outlook users.  I have 25+ SuSE9 users running evolution, who have never had a timeout problem (does that mean evolution beats intelligent design ;)

Yesterday my partner noticed something new, below is her Email to me I received this morning.

******************************Begin Email************
Facts:   Delynda pc.  pc=dstevens   user=dstevens   pc= 10.12.0.10

Complaint:  Unable to login to email (Outlook 2003)  ALL day at HQ (where server is) today, and all day yesterday at remote office (over WAN link)

From about 3:30 to 4:00 on 12/8 - I could not connect with Outlook2003 - tried lots of stuff and looked at lots of stuff.

About 3:45 I tried Webmail https://companydomain.com/webmail and also using
server ip.   Connection to webmail would just try forever.  Never get there and never timeout (never equaling 5+ minutes).   I setup test user - still
couldn't connect to webmail.

Shaking my head - I went to another pc.   COULD connect to webmail and login as anyone I wanted.    Went back to Delynda pc - Webmail worked ok, and Outlook connected okay.     All I did in between was look at every log on the server to see if I could find anything.   The logs didn't tell ME anything

During this same period - the GM said that he was having no problems all day with connecting to email.

I'm clueless.     What next?   Bigger guns?

After reading this, I'm starting to wonder if this is an IDENT auth issue.  Could the server be somehow not allowing or responding to some machines and not providing services to those machines.  next time I see this I'm going to see if being a DHCP user (or not) makes any difference.

I'm posting this to see if anyone has seen this type of behavior before.  Thanks to any whom may reply with any comments.
