Partial Backup/Restore for Upgrade again
« on: December 11, 2005, 08:22:16 AM »
Hi folks, i come back to an older topic, that was also discussed here http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=27648.msg114317#msg114317 before.

Our 6.01 production server (10user, lots of mail, PDC for the windoze WS) is messed up by several add-ons and contribs (e.g. "update script"), that i could not uninstall completely. The webmail does not work any more. I need to backup and restore only

* user-accounts
* user email
* user-home directories
* user windoze profiles
* everything samba related (passwords, machine-accounts)

What i did before (with a cloned drive/installation) is

a) do a simple upgrade to 7.0b8
b) do a desktop backup, restore to a clean 6.01 install
c) after b) do an upgrade to 7.0b8.

In every case the whole http / squid / internet section was broken (no internet access, httpd error messages without end); user and the main samba stuff restored ok.

So i would like to backup/restore just everything (ibays are not of interest here, i just move them aside before backup/restore) without

/etc/e-smith/??templates...

to achieve the goal.

I was surprised, that the above b) procedure did NOT put back the installation to a "clean state". There must be config-files or stuff related to the mods, that still are restored.

I read and searched my brains out here. Anyone tested a way to do a "clean" reinstall in such cases? Because we need to upgrade to 6.5 or the wonderful 7.0 soon to get samba 3 working.
