I came across a strange problem on one ESSG 4.1.2 server recently. I was getting reports that some mails "dissappear" when sent through the ESSG. Upon close inspection, it seems the only mails that go AWOL are mails being sent to bigpond.net.au or bigpond.com.au (doesn't matter who to as long as it's bigpond, it goes missing).
If you monitor maillog when sending an e-mail to someone at bigpond, it shows the message as sent (..... forwarded to 1 recipients, .... and so on). However, the message never gets there. From e-smith-manager, if you analyse the maillog and look at the recipient statistics, you will find that all mails were successful EXCEPT the bigpond ones, where the mess column shows 0 while the tries column shows a large number (depending on how long ago and how many messages were being sent to them). On one which was sent a few days earlier, mess shows 0, while tries shows 270.
Setting ESSG to forward all outgoing mail to the ISP's SMTP server fixes the problem (and all those "missing" e-mails finally got delivered).
However, I would still like to know what could be wrong. Like I said, it worked for all other domains EXCEPT bigpond. The other ESSG servers don't seem to have this problem, just this one. Any ideas ?
