SME7 B7 XP needed Proxy, Dynsite won't detect IP
« on: December 21, 2005, 04:30:33 PM »
I just tried to setup a Windows XP station behind a 7b7 server.  Internet Explorer would only work when I manually added the SME server as a proxy, which I've seen in the past.

However, Dynsite  ( a dynamic name service update utility ) was unable to detect my global IP address behind the V7b7 server, but works properly with the V6!

All suggestions welcomed!

This should be raised in the Bug Tracker.

I'm not sure the problem IS a bug, or even related to SME 7, the proxy issue has been around for a while on v6 where some sites worked and others didn't unless the proxy was added to the Windows internet network settings!  And with XP SP2, who knows what happens on port probes?

I was hoping someone had a configuration fix for this, without involving the development team.  I'll report back if I solve the problem from the other side

Hey Mike,
if the results were not what you expected after setting up the SME, post a bug report.
Explain what happened, and what you expected should have happened.
Attach any logs to show errors that may point to a problem with the SME.
If it turns out to be Invalid, so be it. The developers and contributors will help decide that.
Good luck
Joe

:-(  :-(

I brought both the workstation & server to the office, daisy chain routed the the new 7B7 server through a wireless router that routes through my SME6 box, and Dynsite worked via a local net off the new server!

So the problem is site related!   I'm using a PPPoE connection , same as at the office but different ISP!

Whatismyip.com resolved  properly at all times, so it wasn't a failed connection!

PITA !

What you might find Mike is that some ISPs have a transparent proxy and depending on the website code, it may be detecting your ISPs IP not yours.  I found this when I was trying to download from someones site, who required to check that you were coming from the right page and IP.

To resolve the problem, we had to put the proxy settings of the ISP into IE and then the IP would resolve properly. I don't believe that SME can use a proxy of a proxy so to speak.
