Configuring SME 6.01-01 for an Optus Satellite
« on: December 22, 2005, 05:45:42 AM »
Hi all!!!

I have the following problem, I have just had my Optus satellite installed and the contractor who installed has given me a static IP address (10.xxx.xxx.xxx), which appears to be hard coded into the modem.

I can put all of the static ip address details (Gateway, Subnet mask, Proxy server and Master DNS)into the SME Server.

This works ok on a pc and I am able to access the Internet, but when the IP address details are configured on the SME server, I am unable to access the internet. Which is most annoying.

Any help would be most appreciative

Cheers

Are you sure your external interface is operating properly?  Dud NIC perhaps?  Can you swap in another one to test it?  If you are at the SME console, does ifconfig report what you'd expect with your static IP?  Can you ping anything on the outside?

Hi All

Well after stuffing around and replacing NIC's and I found that the crossover cable was at fault :hammer: *Replaced and working!*

Also my IP configuration was also up the creek!!

For future reference for all Optus Satellite customers (with a Gilat Skyedge IP Modem) with a static IP of 10.xxx.xxx.xxx

Follow the steps

1. When installing the SME server type in the Static IP of the modem when the installer asks for the gateway this is the MODEM IP not the Gateway address on the Modem. (this is where I fell over)

2. Also set the master DNS to 61.88.88.88 on the SME Server.

3. On your Clients Mac or PC you will need to put the above DNS entry in. If not No Internet access for you!

But now I am very happy!!  :-D

Have a Safe and Happy New Year!

Rob,

I am installing same system at the moment. A couple of questions for you

I am thinking about implementing an SME server between my Gilat box and my LAN.

1) Did using an SME box do away with needing to manually enter proxy settings in your PC's? We work on a large number of PC's each week and DO NOT HAVE TIME to manually config damn proxy settings on each machine (and remember to turn them off afterwwards!!!)

2) Are you using SME as the DHCP? If so, why didnt it hand out the DNS for you?

3)I am hoping me setup (sme to SBS svr) will do away with needing to stuff around with proxy & dns....well i hope so!!

any more info on how well your setup has work would be helpful! :-)

Hi Stocky,

In answer to your questions....

1 & 2) Yes I setup up the SME server as a DHCP server and this is farming out ip adresses to the clients. This also handles the proxy settings etc automatically.

However you may need to put in the DNS entries manually tho, but I found when the DNS server had updated itself I was able to remove the DNS settings from the clients and all is good. (after about 4 hours or so)

Also when setting up the SME server there is a section that asks you for a master DNS stick in the following IP address 61.88.88.88 (Optus DNS)

(3) I am runing a Mac OS X Serve behind the sme server and all is working well only as a file server tho.

Also make sure that the crossover cable (between the modem and the sme server or pc) is in good condition as mine was stuffed.

Hope this helps....

Cheers
