Hardware for SME 7pre3
« on: February 24, 2006, 01:42:07 AM »
I have a choice of two computers to use for a small office of 15-20 employees. The two computers are: PIII 1GHZ or Celeron 2.6GHZ
I know that Celeron processors have some functions disabled, so should I even think about it as a server processor, or will its faster GHZ compensate/ Surpass PIII as a server processor.

Thanks

PS. The main function of this server will be: DHCP/ Gateway, web server, mail server,  Kronolith, Mnemo and Nag. I will also install SME7admin.

From what I remember, Celeron is basically the Intel name for a Pentium with less L2 cache.  In this case the PIII should have 256k and the Celeron 2.6G has 128k.  I don't have any benchmarks to back it up, but my gut says the Celeron should still be the better choice, being 1.6Ghz faster and a faster Front Side Bus.  Also, if it uses DDR memory (some early P4/celerons mainboards used SDRAM) thats an additional boost.

My two cents.  :-)

Roughly same answer.

PIII : use SDRam at 100 or 133 MHz. Cache size for 1 GHz is 256 kb or 512 kb.
Celeron 2.6 GHz : use DDR Ram equivalent to 100 MHz equivalent to 200 MHz for SDRAM. Moreover, if your motherbord supports dual-channel memory management, you will have a transfert rate of 400 MHz. All things good for servers. In opposite, cache size is 128 KB but should not be catastrophic.

More important is the amount of memory associated with it. And for long term, on which can you increase put the more memory? Should be the celeron.

At home, I use a Celeron 3330MHz for SME 6.0 server. Average load : 2,5%.
