Proliant ML370 hardware raid vs. software raid

Folks -

I'm getting ready to crank up a Proliant ML370 with SME 7.0. How much of an overhead hit will I suffer if I use the linux raid 5 vs. using a SmartArray card?

Thanks -

Mark

Hi markehle

I'm runing ML370's here at work but only in hardware raid 5 ... why not just purchase a scsi card with raid on it .. there so cheap through ebay. The ML370 was so cheap I purchased 4 of them ... 3 to use as servers plus one for spares.

Also if you have problems with hard drives later on it's a lot easier to just pull one out and just replace ... thats assuming you have external scsi drive bays and not internal.

Just my view.

Regards,

Tib

Yeah, that's pretty much what I decided to do. I just now bought a raid module to put on the motherboard of my server.

Where's a good place to get 18gb drives for these servers? I find them on eBay, but they seem kind of expensive compared to the drives I bought for my proliant 1600.

Ebay is about the only bet there as well ... just have to wait out till you get good deals. I purchased all the drives for these servers from ebay as well ... I was lucky though I found a person in the US who was selling new drives for really low prices at that time ... all the drives seem to be running sweet still and that was about one year ago so I would say they should be even cheaper now.
