Topic: Hardware Configurations Question

Hi all I hope this post is correctly placed

Anyhow I have installed the SME server and seemed to install fine
Installed a server/gateway

I want to be sure my physical connections are correct
Note: DHCP in router is turned off, and SME DHCP on


-I have the local network computers plugged into the router ports
-the routers uplink port is plugged into the etho1(internal) on the SME box
- and etho2(external) plugged into the cable modem, (or VOIP box, then to the cable modem)

Anyhow I'm using all straight RJ45 cat 5 cables.

Is this correct, or do I need any crossover cables for anything?

Or is this physical connections ok ?

With this current connections the SME box does not appears to be dishing up IP's for the local network, perhaps I've got something wrong

Or perhaps I need to ditch the routers uplink port and use one of the local ports on the router??

Please advise or confirm if this physical connection is ok, or if I need crossovers or any other changes, thanks

Do you have link lights on the ethernets port connecting your router and the server?

If not this may suggest that you need a crossover cable, although I doubt it.

Are you sure the cables you are using are OK.

Yes the light are on, and the cables are good, since I've been using them for my network prior to plugging them into the sme server/gateway,

I'm sure the cables are working.

I actually was able to get the SME to servup IP's on the local network, but not when plugged into the router's uplink port, only when plugged into a local network port on the router

I wonder if my router is blocking the DHCP server in the SME box

I don't think it would but I guess it's possible

The main thing though before I go further is to confirm that I am suppose to plug the router uplink port into the etho(internal) port on the SME server, and then etho1(external) out to the cable modem

And to be sure that I don't need any crossover cables for this?

As your router is now acting as a switch, your SME can be pluged into a normal non uplink port.

You should also turn off any filter or port fowarding your router was performing as your SME server now has taken over this function.

uplink ports are invariably x-over ports. uplink ports are usually attached to the first or last port on a hub/switch/router. You cannot have 2 cables plugged into the port that has the uplink port attached to it i.e the straight port and x-over port.

Ok, thats great, so thats why the DHCP server for SME box works when plugging into the routers normal ports,

I'll work on getting internet working after I can at least get into the SME configuration program etc

So If I pluggin the SME server on normal router port, then do I need the other eth1 for gateway or where does that now plug to?

I guess I'm asking do I plug the SME box to the cable modem or do I use the router to the cable modem as I would normally?

Thanks for the response, this has most pleasant thus far I must say people appear helpful.

So with the SME box, do any of the eth ports pose as an uplink? for any other uplink or router uplink etc.? or are these to be treated as any other ethernet connection ?

I realize this is sort of the same question, but I just want to be sure I understand where I should plug the 2 ethertnet cards on the SME box/
and is it better to let the router act as DHCP server or let SME act as DHCP server ?

I've now got SME eth0 plugged into the router normal port
I've got the SME eth1 plugged to the cable modem etc.

SME DHCP is working perfectly, and I can access the web.

Now moving on to configure SME

What is my next step from here, and how to I access the server setup functions

Please advise on my next step now that I've confirmed that I have my hardware plugged in correctly
