post yum qmail #5.1.2 err (couldn't find any host named ...)
« on: March 14, 2006, 04:00:09 AM »
Hi there.
I'm having some email problems with SME 7.0rc3  following a yum update.

On the restart, I occasionally get emails bouncing back with this message:
(edited ... see below for example)

Only some of the messages that I send are being bounced back in this way. I don't think this is a bug, it has something to do with the update.
Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers,
Silas.

Hi there.

Code: [Select]

<bioconcepts.com.au@bioserver.>:
Sorry, I couldn't find any host named bioserver.. (#5.1.2)

The message means what it says: There is no host call ed bioserver. Looks like someone forgot a domain name in the address. I'd guess someone has entered an invalid forwarding address.

Message is back again.

Hi Gordon.
Thanks for your reply.

That error has come back again. I solved it before by upgrading (!) but now I'm stuck.

This is a typical internal email.
"bioserver" is the name of the server and bioconcepts.com.au is the primary domain. The following error message was generated by sending a message to jeffx@bioconcepts.com.au

Code: [Select]
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at bioconcepts.com.au.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

Sorry, I couldn't find any host named bioserver.. (#5.1.2)

It generates this error even though I am typing the full email address into the outlook address bar (jeffx@bioconcepts.com.au), and not using the "autocomplete" function of outlook.

The emails are getting through, but they are generating these error messages on the sender side.

Can anyone help? I'm tearing my hair out!
Cheers,
Silas.

Solved it.

Ok, it took a lot of digging around, but I solved the problem.

The above bug started after adding a user from server-manager. This forced a re-read of the config files, causing some changes to be made to /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains

Adding
Code: [Select]

bioserver:alias-localdelivery
bioserver.:alias-localdelivery

to the top of the list eliminated the bounce messages.

It may help to note that I am running SME 7, with users and settings taken from SME 6. This may help to explain why I got this error. Should I post this to the bug tracker?

Cheers,
Silas.

Every problem should be reported to the bug tracker.

Ok, done.

Ok, I have posted this in the bug tracker.
By the way, I'm not sure the "solution" that I've posted above is the best one as I don't really understand what is going on with all the email components. If anyone has any better ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Cheers,
Silas.
