Is SME7 ready?
« on: March 14, 2006, 04:27:03 PM »
The default page of contribs.org points to info about SME7. The forums are now all about SME7.

What there isn't is any clear indication of the development status of SME7.

Is it finished? Is it in beta? Is it still in alpha or still in development?

Is it ready for deployment on live customer machines yet?

I do not customise any of my SME servers - I do not edit any templates or change any config files or anything. However, most of mine do have a contrib or 2 installed, such as backup-to-desktop or the user-management panel for vacation notification, minor tweaks like that.

Does that mean that these machines cannot be upgraded? Would it be possible to upgrade them if the additional contribs were first removed? If so, is it possible to get a list of installed contribs to work out what needs to be removed?

I would certainly hope so - that's where all of the effort is going.

Did you look at the sticky threads at the top of this forum?

See the Downloads page - it is in pre-release.

That's a choice you need to make. There are a number of production SME7 boxes in the world. But if you don't test before it gets released, it will be too late to change anything if you do find an issue.

There is a sticky thread in this forum about that too, and a Wiki which describes what works and what doesn't work after an upgrade.

In summary - unmodified boxes work and quite a few common contribs either continue to work or new versions for SME7 are available.

Unsolicited, slightly experienced feedback:

The new sme 7 (I am updated to pre4) has performed solidly so far in my experience.  I have 2 networks each with their own sme gateways.

Works for me:

DHCP
DNS
Mail server
