DHCP info?
« on: March 15, 2006, 08:26:44 AM »
Greetings,

I have SME7p4 set up in server-only mode serving dhcp to my network. My questions is this: How do I see dhcp lease/assignment info for my clients? (Please keep in mind that I'm a newb!)

I can pick out ip assigments in the dhcpd/current log, but I'm wondering if there is a file (or maybe a contrib?) with a list of the ips somewhere.

Thanks for the help!

I don't know of a dedicated dhcp contrib for SME7 yet but SME7admin from firewall services has some really nice features as well as a dhcp function where you can at least see the ip addresses assigned.

They're in /var/lib/dhcp/dhcpd.leases.

I'm curious as to why you want to see them.

In my case I use the dhcp leases to find out the IP address of particular PC's so as I can keep track.

Not all PC's here at work have internet access ... most PC's have local webmail etc access but not internet ... so I need to know the IP address so as I can block it's access ... individual ppl don't have access to change there IP address so this setup is good for us.

With over 40 pc's it's a good way to keep tabs on ip addresses.

With a dhcp contrib it's a lot faster to view these leases than to dwell into files etc to find out. I think it should be included in the main setup of SME myself.

nhines ... make sure you do the fix to show the dhcp details located here

@Charlie Brady

Thank you! I have a small home network (2 pc, voip, network printer, laptop) and like to know what the ips are to connect for configuring, etc.

@Tib

Yes, I saw that thread and did the fix; thanks. I now see the ips, ethernet addy and lease date/time in sme7admin, but no hostnames. I installed tinydns also, maybe that is affecting it?

Thank you both, I really appreciate the help!!

What do you have under host names ? ... it it something like pc-00249.xxxxxx.net.

If so thats all you'll get at the moment ... the person who made this great addon is looking into the hostname thing but he's not sure if he can do anything there.

I read through the sme7admin thread, and saw that the pc00xxx thing was being worked on. I expected to see it there, but there was nothing in the column at all.

However, I just finished setting up NIS on the server and client, and now I see machinename.domainname.com in that column. Woo hoo!!

I do have one other question: The dhcp lease appears to be for one day. I guess it really doesn't matter, but do you know if there is a way to change it?

This forum is great! Thanks!
