External Nic stops working
« on: March 24, 2006, 03:20:01 PM »
Hi,
I have a SME in a customers office that decided to stop working on tuesday.  It would not send anything from internal to external.  They could log into the server manager and shutdown and reboot the SME but it still did not work externally.  I went onsite and logged in via putty and re-configured the external nic to dhcp from static and the internet started working.  I then re-configured it back to the original static ip they had before (i did check before changing it and it was the correct ip) and it started working fine.  I thought it might just be a fluke so i went through and installed the latest updates that were available and was on my way.  Last night I logged in from home and checked for any more updates and just made sure it was running properly.  When i woke up this morning i checked to see if it was still running and it was not.  I tried to ping the ip and nothing came back.  I called my customer and sure enough their internet was down.  Is there a log file that i can grab to see what is going on?  I am prepairing another sme right now to take out there and put in to place so I can figure this one out.  I will submit a bug when i get a chance to sit down and get the log files so i can give as much info as i can i just need a little help with where to look.
Thanks
Andy

Probably no need to replace the whole server, just replace the external NIC.

Even that would be precipitous. All we know is that there was some networking problem between the server and the Internet. Such things happen, and are only rarely due to NIC problems.

Alright, here is an update.
The external nic did stop working for some reason the first time.
Switching the ip to dhcp and then back to static fixed it.  The next day when i posted my first question about it happening again, I went onsite to find that the cable modem had actually locked and that is what was causing the internet to not work.  I would still like to look up the log files if someone could point me in the right direction of where to look.
THanks
Andy
