Topic: Post-install fails for 7.0pre3 and 7.0pre4

I'm doing a fresh installation of 7.0 on a Dell Dimension 4100 (P3-933MHz, 256MB RAM, 20GB HD)  and the installation proceds cleanly through to the first reboot.  Once the system restarts, everything looks good until I'm asked to choose a root password.  I enter the password. I confirm the password. I get the bad password warning and I say 'no', then the post-install process stops.  I switched to another terminal, logged in as root with the new password, and checked dmesg and /var/log/messages.  Everything looks OK (i.e. no errors).  The same thing happens with 7.0pre3 and 7.0pre4.

Does anyone know what's happening to cause this?  BTW I used the same CD to upgrade a different server from 6.0 to 7.0pre3, and everything worked.

Was the hardware running OK before you put SME7 on it?

Did you checxk the iso MD5sum before burning your install media?

Thanks for responding, byte and Dave.  The hardware is known good.  It was running that other operating system before liberating it and installing SME Server.  Also, dmesg indicated that all hardware was properly detected.  I admit that I didn't check the iso's md5sum, but I had used pre3 to upgrade another server, and it worked flawlessly; therefore, I assumed it was OK.

I downloaded RC1 yesterday and verified that the md5sum was OK.  If it fails at the same spot, I'll let you know.  In the meantime, I'll log a bug in bigzilla.

I'm open to other suggestions.  The SME Server forum has always been a terrific source of help.  (I've been using e-smith/SME Server since 4.0 (pre-Mitel).)

I logged the bug in Bugzilla a few days ago and we're working through it.  If you want to follow its progress, the reference number is 1145.  Apparently, I'm not the first person to encounter this situation.
