Lifespan of 6.0.1
« on: March 29, 2006, 02:23:35 AM »
Can someone tell me how much longer it would be feasible to run 6.0.1?  How much longer will updates be available for 6.0.1?

Would 6.5 have any more life than 6.0.1?
Is it best to just move on to 7.x?

Thanks,
Thomas

I would think that critical core/security updates would be possible to maintain for as long as legacy RH 7.3 updates are available, but developers resources are limited and really focused on new coming SME 7.  Start testing version 7 and preparing for migration now or wait for the "official" release and test then. Even if SME 6.x doesn't have known major security issues now, it will not be receiving as much attention from the developers as SME 7 in a future.

Updates for 6.x will continue for as long as the community supports the verification of the updates (and Fedora Legacy provide updates). The verification has been the weakest link so far.

There is no more life in either 6.5 or 6.0 compared to 6.0.1 as all have entered maintenance phase.

For new installations SME 7 must be the way to go. For existing installations please think about your migration strategy to SME 7.
