SME V.5 and 40gB HDD
« on: January 07, 2002, 08:52:28 AM »
I'm running SME V.5 I have read the postings about using a large HDD with my server/gateway...but it doesn't seem to work for me. I have a Maxtor 40 gB HDD. Can anyone give some clear advice on how to make my e-smith box see the full drive.

Thanks!!

**I appreciate all the info I have gotten from these postings...has helped a lot.

Hi,
what kind of mainboard (revision, bios,...) do you use? I thinks it´s a limmitation of the onboard ide controller. If your board is too old to support such large disks take a smaller disk to boot e-smith and add the big disk as secondary... After booting e-smith regognizes the full hdd space.

Thanks for the reply Judy.

I don't know the exact date of the bios revision but its an Intel board w/  dual pentium ll 300 processors. I thought e-smith could only use one HDD unless it was using two for mirroring?

Actually, SME can use more than one hard disk. You just need to manually configure the system to use more than one (when not using for mirroring). You should only connect the boot up / system drive initially and install SME on it first. Then, connect any additional drives and configure the system to use them.

Search past postings on adding additional hdds. It's been brought up a few times before.

As for your motherboard, Intel boards are notorious for these kinds of problems especially if the BIOS is out of date. Search Intel's web site for an updated BIOS and see if that will fix your problem.
