how to reinstall clamav or freshclam
« on: March 29, 2006, 11:04:55 AM »
Hi guys

Running 7rc1. I keep getting an email saying "freshclam: Update failed".

I've done some archive searching and the cure is to uninstall and then reinstall the clam rmps. Problem is I don't know how to do that.

I run  rpm -q -a | grep clam and saw a list of installed rpms.

Then I tried  rpm -U smeserver-clamav-1.2.0-01 but it says "error: open of smeserver-clamav-1.2.0-01 failed: No such file or directory"

How could accomplish this?
Cheers

No need to reinstall just do
#cd /var
#chown -R clamav:clamav clamav
Now try it:
#/usr/bin/freshclam
You shouldn't get any more error messages now.

That would only be true if the reason that the update failed was because your clam RPM installation was corrupted. If that could happen, then we (the developers) would want to know why it happened, and work out how to prevent it. But I don't think that has happened.

I expect the update failed only because the upstream repository was temporarily unavailable. But if you report your problem to the bug tracker, we can help you investigate and find out what is happening.

Around here we don't subscribe to the Windows support philosophy - "Something didn't work, so we need to do a re-install".

I have been getting these messages for about the past week.

I did as much surfing to try and resolve this but the problem persists.

I have logged onto the SME box and tried the following as recommended:

#cd /var
#chown -R clamav:clamav clamav
Then:
#/usr/bin/freshclam

My Freshclam logs show the following:

I use IPCop as my firewall and this SME box is configured as a server only in the orange zone. It has been running fine for months (as have previous versions of SME 5 and 6) in exactly the same zone protected by IPCop.

Looking in the SME logs and also the IPCop logs - shows that the SME box is trying the update hourly but failing continually with the same error. This is also confirmed by the admin emails I am getting saying that "freshclam: Update failed".

I would really appreciate if anyone could make suggestions on what I can do to try and remedy this.

I will happy enough to put this in bug tracker if required but it seems that only I am having this problem at the moment.

I can confirm that I was getting these errors prior to the release of the recent upgraded packages but they persist.

Cheers
Steve

So did you read the FAQ ?

It says the mirrors are not fully sync'd and that's why it cannot do the update.

>  "freshclam: Update failed".

The freshclam update site is obviously very busy, you will see these messages from time to time or even for periods of time until you are able to successfully connect.

If this message is continuous (eg longer than a few hours or a day), then there is a problem somewhere, and you should report it to the bug tracker.

I am looking for some help - I have a problem updating freshclam for the past week or more - and it is consuming a lot of data from the internet as it retires the update hourly. I am getting about 1GB of traffic due to the updte attempts. See Bug Report 1861 if you want the background.

The problem seems to be related to an issue with my ISP.

Is there some way i can manually force the freshclam update and nominate the database to use freom the other mirrors http://www.clamav.net/mirrors.html - it seems that using the US mirrors rather than the Australian mirrors is the way to get a successful update.

Any assistance greatly appreciated as I would like to stop the waste of my download allowance.

Cheers

Steve
