Mail Alias
« on: April 06, 2006, 11:55:03 AM »
Hello

I've been using SME Server (6.0.1-01) for quite a while for myself and a few clients all over Switzerland and recently started using SME7 RC1 productively. So far, everything runs great. Cheers to the SME Team!

A client using a SuSE Linux 9.0 Server to protect their MS-Exchange System from the Internet has used an email alias mail@domainname.ch as their primary Mail alias instead or the spammer favorite info@domainname.ch. The SuSE 9.0 Server died due to hardware problems and I decided to replace the SuSE 9 Server with a better one, SME7 RC1. Everything works great, except for the mail alias (Known fact about accounts called www,ftp and mail.)

Is there any way around this? I have a group called email, containing the users and would like to add an alias "mail".

The Server is in Server-Only mode, a Sonicwall Firewall provides protection for the LAN. Mails to the user on SME are forwarded to master.domainname.ch, the name of the MS Small-Business Server they are using, that works great (After adding that alias in SBS...). The only thing I'd need is a mail alias called mail. ;-(

I'm fairly familiar with Linux and can handle almost anything on the console line. But I've never used Qmail, I'm familiar with Sendmail and Postfix and could hard-code an alias there, but on SME, I must admit I'm stumped for the moment...

Any Ideas, anyone?

Thanx

Quick and dirty fix
« Reply #1 on: April 06, 2006, 08:36:59 PM »
E-Mail Alias called mail.
==================

SME Server doesn't allow an alias called Mail.

As a quick and dirty fix, create a user called "test" (4 letters!), later edit the file

/home/e-smith/db/accounts and use search to find the new account. Change as required..

The line should read as follows:

mail=pseudonym|Account|email

Repeat, this is a quick & dirty fix.
Maybe your modification disappears after editing new users or aliases. Just re do it!

Your mileage may vary.
