Hi

I'm interested in trying SME Server 7 but when ever I download the version 7 rc1 ISO to make the cd/dvd, the CD fails the media test, I've tried downloading the ISO from different mirror sites but I'm still having a problem. Is anyone else having trouble with the version 7 RC1 ISo images?

Ive seen older cd rom drives have problems reading CD-RW discs. How old is the drive? Is the drive a burner? Is the cd and hdd sharing a cable? Ever run a memory test on the PC? Download this and create a boot floppy or boot cd:  http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Boot from it, and if you see any errors at all , the PC is having a problem.
Might also run the mem test on the PC downloading & burning the image. And try burning a CD-R disc instead.

Hi compdoc and lu2fgn

My problem seems to have been caused by *waits for a drum roll*...duff media, I went through about 6 CD-R's and kept gettings the same error so i switched to Maxell CD-R and it worked fine.

So if you buy those cheap 50 cd-r's on a spindle becareful you'll probably get at least a quarter of them being "dodgy".

Scan the buglist andthe forums. I feel certain this issue has arisen already and it is a bug (?? Centos). Skip the media test and proceed.

Well in my case when I did the media test I tried an install afterwards and the install would fail due to the drive not being able to read the CD.
Now that I know that the media is okay I will try the install as soon as I can.

Maybe try this for your media checks
----- From the Fedora FAQ (http://www.fedorafaq.org) -----

Q: The installer's media check says all my CDs are bad!

A: There is a bug in the kernel which causes the media check to say some CDs are bad when they are not, on some systems. To do a successful media check, do the following:
At the installer prompt, type: linux mediacheck ide=nodma

Run the media check on your CDs/DVD.

Reboot, and run the installer normally.

Note that sometimes mediacheck will report that only some CDs are bad, but this will still fix that problem.

----- From the Release Notes of FC4 -----

The mediacheck function is highly sensitive, and may report some usable discs as faulty. This result is often caused by disc writing software that does not include padding when creating discs from ISO files. For best results with the mediacheck, boot with the option:

linux ide=nodma

Use the sha1sum utility to verify discs before carrying out an installation. This test accurately identifies discs that are not valid or identical to the ISO image files.

---------------

Also, you could manually test your CDs from within Linux using a command like 'cat /dev/cdrom | sha1sum' (assuming your CD-ROM is /dev/cdrom). YMMV, it might not give better results that FC's mediacheck...
