NICs not starting on every boot
« on: April 19, 2006, 04:48:56 PM »
I have built several SME servers and most work fine.

I have found several pc's that the NIC's don't initialize everytime. It seems that every other boot up, they work fine. But that doesn't work well if I reboot remotely.

In the current machine that is having these problems, the NIC's are 3com 3c905b's. The machine is a Dell XPS R450 with 256Mb Ram.

I have in the past tried several combinations of NIC's without any resolution.

I am using SME 7 RC1.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Use different NICs. There's plenty which do work.

I can confirm this same fault with a 3Com 3C905B-TX NIC on a SME 7 box. As Charlie said - I just replaced it and all is good now.

Shall I log a bugtracker job so that this can be noted in the FAQ? e.g. Do not use this NIC if you have these problems?

I have stopped using any 3com NIC's as they just plain don't work properly.

I am using d-link NIC's now and have had great luck with them.
