I can't help feeling that a sticky forum post should not be the primary means of announcing this momentous release.  Surely RC2 deserve s a "News Flash" on the News page at the same time as the release is sent to the mirrors?

I did just that, but the contribution disappeared into the ether, presumably pending the moderator's approval.  I am guessing that the moderator is our communications guru, Greg Swallow.  Now if he (or someone) wants to approve news posts, thats fine.  However that means that he is the only one in a position to make timely news posts.  The way I spot whether there is a new release is to check the download at ibiblio.  rc2 was the first time since before pre1 that the forum announcement was actually posted before I saw the new release, since the delay between updating the download and posting an announcement has previously been a couple of days.
My point is that the news is rather old, and when we actually have some news, the last place to look for it is the news.

Your presumption is correct.  The front page of this site is no place for non-reviewed items (wouldn't you agree).

Like most that are interested, I just went to that "sticky post" and clicked on "Watch this topic for replies" and bingo...Instant email notification of any changes.  I also watch other important threads so I keep up to date on what's happening.

Front page news does not have that feature so for me watching the topics that are important to me is more useful.

Thanks - I have now made an announcement. I did post to the devinfo list, but should also have posted to the discussion list. I will do that in a moment.
