Another SME Server running in same Lan
« on: May 18, 2006, 01:13:31 PM »
Guy's,

This is one thing I've never done and I want to find out before I do it (don't want to knock the other server out   )

I want to put 7.0x into may lan which I already have a server doing the work as fileserver/dhcp in server-gateway mode, so I guess I would need to setup the version 7.0x in server only mode and a different IP to the main server and turn off dhcp on the 7.0x server and hopefully that wouldn't affect the running of the other server.

Is this what any of you guys have done before and any tip's would be gladly accepted :)

TIA

I have 2 SME7.0 servers on my network, and that is exactly what I did. Server only mode, Static IP, turn off DHCP. Works great. Someday I hope to play with Knuddi's NIS contrib to see what I have to do to make it work with 7.0

Assuming that you are running windows clients and a windows domain, not a workgroup; you'll need to reconfigure SME to function as a domain member, not a domain controller -- which is the configuration that SME comes setup with "out of the box.".  I have a howto for SME < 6.0.1, that will get you close -- I keep meaning to update this for SME 7.  You can find it here:

http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver//contribs/gzartman/HowToGuides/SME_DomainClientHowto.htm

You can fill in the gaps in my howto with this document from the Samba website, located here:

http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/domain-member.html#id2538850

I have an two SME machines on my network:  one as the PDC and the other as a domain member.  Works great.

Good luck,

Thanks for your replies. Greg, I'm actually running as a workgroup only and windows users are in workgroup as well.

Thanks again for your replies
