File Sharing
« on: May 18, 2006, 03:07:48 PM »
Hi all

I've read all the docs regarding file sharing and ftp and ibays etc.

The SME server seems to be working as it should

I'm not fully understanding the file sharing?

What method to use for linux clients and file sharing ?
Do I simply use ftp to ibays ? or other ?

According to the documentation it does appears to indicate that I can edit files in the ibays. The documentation sort of indicates that I can only view the files or folders, but not actually open a document and edit it ?

I guess my starting question for this topic is for the linux client machines ?

Please advise with some tips or better understanding of file sharing on SME and linux clients
Can I edit a document from linux client ? that is in an ibay ?
Or do I simply have access to view the files and folder and open the documents only ?

Do I need to logon from the client with any paticular user and pass ? in order to have access to the network ?

I have the SME set as Domain controller etc. and have created my workgroup and server name. thus far.

Also I plan to boot to windows occasionally and have not tried to file share in windows to date, but would appreciate any pointers that would allow the same document editing etc?

Thanks for any help with this.

File Sharing

File sharing on the LAN is done (primarily) via the samba, which simulates the "Network Neighborhood” or "Microsoft Network" in the Windows/Linux environment. Many desktop Linux distros have easy interface to connect to MS network via samba.
For the Ibays that have web enabled you can see all three folders inside the share (cgi-bin, files, html) and ALL the files and folders inside of those. If web is not enabled for the ibay, you can see only content of the “files” folder inside the share.  Depends on the read/write permissions, users can read-only or read-write any document inside the shared folder, create/modify/delete new or accessible folders and documents.

Other ways to access the shared documents in ibays are SSH (SCP), FTP. Those methods used mostly from the Internet.
User/password have to be present on the SME and have permissions for the Ibay. That is configured via Server-manager interface.

Here is my findings for file sharing

Here is where I'm at with file sharing.

I've set all clients workgoups to the same workgroup.

I've not actually shared anything on my clients, but I can navigate to the SME server files and folders,

I login due to my login settings, and can navigate perfectly.

However when attempting to open an open office document, the open office screen appears then dissappears.

I can ftp and navigate and I can open a document just fine, but cannot save.

I cannot open a document with samba.

My settings for the folders and files on the sme are ibay

Description: xxxxxibayname
Group: Everyone
User access via file sharing or user ftp: group=write, read=everyone
Public access via web or anonymous ftp: Local Network(no password required)
Execution of dynamic content (CGI, PHP, SSI) disabled

Now perhaps I should set Group: (my group)
but I should still be able to samba and write to the ibay.
I cannot write only read, and cannot seem to open files either.

When trying to create a new folder, I get access denied

Please advise, thanks

I've changed permissions
Ok here is where I'm at now:

Regarding Samba or SMB whatever you prefer to call it.

I don't know why, but basically I had to change permissions to my files/folder to allow groups to write access prior to uploading to the ibay.

I now can create folders, etc. but not open existing files
Nor can I save any documents to a location on the SME server.

Anyhow
Now I can actually write to the folders on on the SME server via Samba, but still cannot open a document at all ?
I can open or view an image file, but no documents pdf's or open office etc.
I found a kwrite doc I could open, but nothing else

I also tried to create a document and save to smb ibay on the SME server;and export to ibay vis SMB but I got an error saving: using protocol smb is not supported

I don't know why all this is?

Typically shouldn't I just be able to open and edit documents etc. on SME server via smb ? as long as the user/group has read/write permissions.

Please advise thanks all.

Hi all and thanks for the help

It appears that when booting to windows, the file shares works perfect I can work in a document then save to the server using open office for windows

But cannot do that with Open office for linux for some reason

I sometimes get a error that says input/output error, and mostly I get the error that says cannot save protocol smb or something like that.

Sounds like is might be a Open office problem or something.

But just to clarify I basically have the folders on my desktop then I copy them to the sme server via smb

Please advise with any info on this topic.
Thanks

Problem solved

Hi all

Basically I've booted to Windows, and also Other Distros of Linux using Open office and the samba works as it should

Mepis 6.0 beta2 is my main OS currently on 2 computers, and appearantly have the same symptom on both computers, but when booting to another OS it appears to work fine edit docs, save to server etc.

I'm considering this problem solved.

Very strange symptom though, and does not directly point to Open office because open office works perfectly on my local machine files etc. But something wrong when opening files on networked computers etc.

Anyhow I am considering this post closed and solved.

Thanks to all.
