Cannot finish boot process after power failure
« on: June 05, 2006, 07:40:41 AM »
**CAUTION** - Real Noob here with Linux so go easy on me!

Firstly, a big thanks to the ppl out there that are gifted with the ability to code (I'm not one) - I stumbled over SME some time ago and have been nothing but impressed with it's stability and ease of use.  Although not a programmer, I come from an AS/400 background (don't talk to me about proprietory!) and am very impressed with SME's level of stability and security........not to mention I can run my squeezebox on it.

Secondly...However, I think this is where my faith in Linux as an OS is being tested - I'm not giving up just yet though.

Config is as follows:  - Single IDE Disk on SME 7 RC2 - up til now, EXTREMELY stable.

After a power failure my SME box started ok, but cannot complete the linux boot process.  It gets to where it realizes there is a filesystem problem and forces a check on dev/vg_primary/lv_root/ file system and At about 25% the way thru, it fails with error

'UNEXPECTED CONSISTANCY - Run fsck mannually'

"An error occurred during the filesystem check - Dropping you to a shell'

At this point it is prompting me for either an Admin password or Ctrl-D to continue.

Now here's the problem - The keyboard appears to lock during the boot process.  I can't even type I for an Interactive startup and it appears the only way out is to power down the box and start again.

My question is "how does one do a fsck from a bootable / rescue disk?  I have done lots of looking around, but even searching for fsck in the search section didn't seem to give me any answers.

Some help would be more than appreicated.

Regards

Rob

That is strange my keyboard does not lock, is it really properly connected? Do you see the indicators for numlock, etc light up on power up? Interactive start-up or pressing a key is handled properly at my machine (SME7RC2).

Yeah, I know it's strange, but the keyboard lights definitely do their thing at the beginning of the boot process.

I've tried 2 different keyboards with the same result.

I"m wondering whether it's worth pulling the disk out and puting it into another PC somewhere to see what happens.......

......is that wise?
