REBOOT and SHUTDOWN do not work, CANNOT CHANGE SETTINGS
« on: June 08, 2006, 07:00:56 AM »
I have a new PC (PCIex, Celeron 2.8GHz, 512MB, 40GB)

reconfiguring hangs at the end until I reset
(I have done a fresh install of SME7rc2).

reboot does not work - even at the command line
nor does shutdown -h now

any ideas?  SME7rc2 cofigured as follows...

Server Mode   serveronly
Local IP address / subnet mask   192.168.99.2/255.255.255.0
Gateway   192.168.99.199
Additional local networks   192.168.99.0/255.255.255.0
DHCP server   disabled
Server names
DNS server   192.168.99.2
Web server   www.tyrex.com.au
Proxy server   proxy.tyrex.com.au:3128
FTP server   ftp.tyrex.com.au
SMTP, POP, and IMAP mail servers   mail.tyrex.com.au
Domain information
Primary domain   tyrex.com.au
Virtual domains   tyrex.com.au
Primary web site   http://www.tyrex.com.au
Server manager   https://dfemail/server-manager/
User password panel   https://dfemail/user-password/
Email Addresses   useraccount@tyrex.com.au
firstname.lastname@tyrex.com.au
firstname_lastname@tyrex.com.au

ps also browser access to the server-manager seems very slow
(typically 10-30 seconds), and mailsettings do not 'stay' in place,
although I can add an ibay.

TIA Rob

.. looks to me like SME is not keen on your mobo chipset, what board & chipset are you using.  SATA or IDE?  Does the board have hardware RAID & are you using it?

Have you added any extra contribs?

When you say the commands don't work, what is displayed on the screen?  What is posted to the logs?  If anything!

what board & chipset are you using.  ELITEGROUP 661FX-M7 board
SIS661FX northbridge SIS964/964L southbridge

SATA or IDE?  IDE - I didnt use SATA in case of compat isses

Does the board have hardware RAID & are you using it? ONLY ONE DRIVE so No (cannot find RAID mention in mobo book)

Have you added any extra contribs? NO JUST THE PLAIN SME7RC2 INSTALL

When you say the commands don't work, what is displayed on the screen?  What is posted to the logs?  If anything!
MY ORIGINAL INSTALL HAD MONO ADDED - REINSTALL WITHOUT THAT HAS CORRECTED THE COMMANDS NOT WORKING (reboot and shutdown )
BUT STILL SERVERMANAGER IS VERY SLOW (5-30secs) AND CHANGES TO
EMAIL SETTINGS DO NOT STAY SAVED (although as I said create ibay is ok)

Thanks for you interest smeghead (havent seen any Red Dwarf for quite a while.

The upgrade suggestion is definately a good idea.

When you say 5 to 30 seconds do you mean from when you make a save in the server manager to when it responds that the changes have been completed?  When I do the same process on my P4 2.8 system it takes from 5 to 15 seconds.

I will try that and report back either way!

Just do a update from the command line, it only takes 2 or 3 minutes.

yum update

signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot

P.S. the .nl mirrors are not synced up correctly.  If you want the entire ISO then get it fron the US or Asutralia mirror only.

WELL IT CANNOT GET ANY EASIER CAN IT! 18MB download, all automatic
WHAT CAN I SAY?  "YUM" - thanks for the advice
although I am not sure where it downloaded from its unlikely to be nl.

Sadly when it was finished (and after the reboot/reconfigure)
the 'Restarting System' prompt did not do so still - I have to 'reset' but no big deal.

My server-manager panel and email panels are coming up quicker
BUT MY MAIN PROBLEM PERSISTS - MY EMAIL SETTINGS DO NOT STAY SAVED

I guess its time to change the mobo.
But hopefully others will spot the fast 7rc2 to 7rc3 upgrade method.
Thanks to all, Robert

You are correct, all yum updates at this time come directly from ibiblio only.

Which email settings are not staying.  You may have found a bug and I would like to get more info from you on this.

I change fetch times to 30min, not-at-all, 15mins and secondary email:
none of these stay after saving!
I have traced where the fetchtimes are but do not know the settings for not-at-all: I may just trace the other files too, vi them manually and then regenerate.

You should be able to see the system attempting to update the database with your new values in the messages log, please look at the time you try to make the changes and see if there are any errors reported.  Perhaps post that part of the log if there are errors.

You could also look to see if the configuration database has the same timestamp as the attempted update (/home/e-smith/db/configuration) to determine if its is getting touched at all by the process.

You must set the "Email Retrevial Mode" at the top of that same page to something other than "Standard (SMTP)" for the settings at the bottom the work.  Are you sure you need to retreive email this way?

Don't do this.  Don't ever change any files manually.  SME uses a unique templating and database configuration system that controls most of the config and other files.  When you re-boot you will probably loose any changes that you make anyway.  You need to read the documentation.

Besides that, the server manager should work as intended without you having to make manual changes to config files.  If it does not work, then you need to report a bug.

AH! THANKYOU - THAT WORKED!
I AM ACTUALLY WANTING A SERVER THAT WILL NOT RETRIEVE EMAIL (only send out)

I UNDERSTAND THIS! AS A TECHNICAL USER I WAS GOING TO TRACE TO THE UNDERLYING TEMPLATE AND ALTER THE SAME DATA THAT THE SCREEN DOES.

BUT AGAIN YOU ARE CORRECT TO FIX IT WITH PROPER OPTIONS NOT WITH A HAMMER!

THANKS AGAIN

Try using the quote feature, instead of replying in capitals please, this is the equivalent of shouting on the net and is considered pretty rude behaviour. Abve that it makes reading your replies a little easier. The text you reply to should be in between [ quote= ] [ /quote ] tags and your reply goes outside these tags. The forum does this automatically if you hit the quote button instead of the reply button.
