Topic: SME Server (7) optimisation

I've got an old archive server running that only needs to make old files accessible to my network. To keep it running smoothly as possible i'm trying to optimise it by disabling all non needed services.

I've set all e-mail, virus scanning and spam filter setting to disbled. But looking at my running processes with Sme7admin (great contrib btw!) i can still see that there are related services running:

qmail, qpsmtpd, sqpsmtpd, clamd, freshclam

I know i can stop them manually with Sme7admin but they will run again after the next reboot. Shouldn't these services have been stopped by SME, or are they essential to SME?!

Does someone btw know what services are essentially needed by SME?

You might want to try to disable them completely for further reboots?

Eg.
db configuration setprop qmail status disabled
db config setprop xxxx status disabled

signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot

But i'm still wondering if some of this shouldn't be done by SME automatically and what are the essential processes so i can turn off the other ones like:

- i'm not using any mail functionality, can i disble smtp-auth-proxy
 - i'm not using any company addressbook so can i disable ldap?
 - i'm not using any database functionality myself so can i disable mysqld
 - i haven't got any Apple Mac's in my lan can i disable atalkd
 - my users are authenticated against my windows ad, can i disable radiusd/oidentd/ldap

you can imagine, that i use sme for allmost anything including toasting wm-sandwiches   , but for that kind of thing i would shurely take a specialized linux distro. Lower hardware and more secure for not offering unneeded services: Perhaps

http://www.freenas.org/, which has some extra features or even easier is http://www.serverelements.com/naslite.php.

I installed NASLITE on a K5 with Gigabit Card and 64 MB RAM. And it was extremely fast and responsive (but no Raid with NASLITE).

In my little IT-World SME is the OneForAll Server in a small/medium office.

Webhosting, mailserver, storage and other specialized stuff could or should better run from other distros or even hardware (e.g. a router).
