Error: /dev/md2:Raid 1 setupSME v5
« on: January 20, 2002, 03:55:31 AM »
Help Please!

I am trying to install SME V5 on an Intel Plll 450, with raid 1 software mirroring.
I am using 2 - 6.4 gB HDD. This is a new install.

I have a CDROM drive set up on IDE2 and the 2 HDD on IDE1. One drive is slave the other master.

I keep getting the following error:

activating swap partitions: /dev/md2  swap on /dev/md2: Invalid arguement

What am I doing incorrectly?? I wonder if its due to the fact that I both drives on the same IDE cable?

I have tried using a different drive and a different cable.

Thank you in advance!

Well, I can't say for sure that this is _the_ problem, but it's definitely _a_ problem.  Each drive should be on its own IDE channel (as master), otherwise you'll take a huge performance hit.  It could be that hda and hdc are hard-coded into the install script.

Thank you Dan.

I will try setting the drives up as you suggest...but I'm afraid I don't understand the part about hda and hdc being hard coded into the install script.

To Dan:

How can I get around the hard coding in the script??

/dev/hda is the primary master hard drive, while /dev/hdc is the secondary master.  I suspect these are hard-coded into the install script, but I don't know for sure.  The only way I know of to get around this (presumed) limitation is to install the hard drives as Mitel intends, which is each drive as master on its own channel.

Second...yes i have one set on primary ide as master; and the secong hdd hdd set on ide2 as master. then i have the cdrom drive set as slave on ide2as a follow up...

I made the changes outlined by dan and things still don't work.

Let me qualify that: i disconnected the 2nd drive after installation. i booted the sme v5 server. it booted fine. so i replaced the 2nd drive and rebooted. it rebooted fine...although i got an error during the boot process saying one drive was still misssing.(then installed the raidmonitor module) a fter installations were done,

Then reinstalled the server sme v5got the same error during raid setup about invalid arguement (as outlined in my first post).then

So the raid program wrote to both drives...despite this error message. however, i don't want to rely on this raid setup if it's invalid....see what i mean.??

It prob is working...but i am worried about the error...i'm a newbie to linux but i am never happy when a server boots with a error message. having it happen in an os iIam unfamiliar with is even more worrying.

thanks!!!
