I may not be Dan Brown, but I think I can still help. I read your previous post and Dan's answer. I think what Dan means is that somehow hda and hdc are hard-coded in the install script. I haven't checked this, but it may be. hda is master1 and hdc is master2, which means you must set one of your hard drives to be master on bus 1 and the other to be master on bus 2. The cd-rom drive can then be slave on either bus 1 or bus 2. This is what the manual suggests you do and rather than trying to get around it, I would first give it a shot. Have you?

Re my previous post: I was responding to what I remembered reading in your first topic and Dan's reply to it. I didn't check to see that Dan had already clarified his reply. So my post was pretty superfluous.
Having said that, you haven't yet told us what happens when you make one hard disk master 1 and the other master 2. You did write you have to IDE buses, so why not try that? Please post the results here.

Second...yes I have one hdd set on primary ide as master; and the secong hdd set on ide2 as master. Then I have the cdrom drive set as slave on ide2

As a follow up...
I made the changes outlined by Dan then reinstalled the sme v5server (then installed the raidmonitor module) and got the same error during raid setup about invalid arguement (as outlined in my first post).

Then:

After installations were done,  I disconnected the 2nd drive. I booted the sme v5 server. It booted fine. So I replaced the 2nd drive and rebooted. It rebooted fine...although I got an error during the boot process saying one drive was still misssing.

So thr raid program wrote to both drives...despite this error message. However, I don't want to rely on this raid setup if it's invalid....see what I mean.??


It prob is working...but I am worried about the error...I'm a newbie to linux but I am never happy when a server boots with a error message. Having it happen in an OS I am unfamiliar with is even more worrying.

Hi,
Frankly, I know zilch about RAID. It just seemed like there was some sort of misunderstanding about your set-up that had to be cleared out of the way before someone who does have a clue about RAID can do some real troubleshooting. I think you should start a new topic about this (again), because the current topic, intriguing though its title is, doesn't really cover your problem.
