Topic: A question about the mail server function

Hi, I am still new to SME but I was wondering if the mail server would operate in standalone mode as opposed to gateway mode. Excuse my ignorance but there was something in the docs that raised the doubt with me.

I have a server that I have recently inherited and am trying to flatten my network to only one NAT device as we are having issues with multiple IPSEC connections failing and I want to exclude the SME server first.

I am guessing I just have to convert the role of the server to standalone and then forward port 25 to the SME box after the mail component is setup....

You have it right in one.  Simply re-configure for Server Only, and then forwared port 25 to the SME.  The mail server continues to function in either mode.  I think only multi-drop works in private server mode, though.

thanks for the reply.... so multidrop is pop3 collection for a domain?

if so then no need in this setup as it will be doing straight SMTP

Yes, this will work perfectly as straight SMTP with port 25 forwarded at the firewall.  I have this exact setup running as a mail cleaner in front of an old Exchange server; the SME server receives the mail on port 25 with the Exchange server as the "delegate" mail server; viruses & spam are knocked out and the good stuff goes on to the Exchange server via SMTP.  No multidrop required.

Yes, muli-drop is for pop3 collection.  I was just saying the mail server works fine in serveronly and server-gateway modes, but can only use mulit-drop in private server-gateway.

I think I have done same thing - I mean moved gateway mode on SME away -and now mail server have some problems on getting mail send from away mail-servers.
The port is properly forwarded on my router, and when the mail is going to be sent-in to SME the TCP connection isn't properly setup. The SME does sent ACK packege after getting SYN from away-server but this answer never gets to that server and connection stays half-open. These packeges are however forwarded through router, but disappears somewere later on.
To make things even more funny only my ISP mail-server can send-in mails to my SME machine.
Moreover POP3 works well from SME -> I can download messages out of my local network, and I can send mails form SMTP on SME machine to whatever server I want.
I have no idea where the problem is, but I need to investigate it.
If so knows what is the matter I would apprieciate any help
