I have the following setup: A normal ide drive (on mobos ide)+ 2 ide drives on Qtec "cheapo" raid controller. I want to install the sme on the ide drive on the mobo's ide and then have a raid 1 array that consist of the drives connected to the Qtec controller. For some reason I cannot change the "default" setup. The sme always creates an array from the disks on the Qtec (that's ok, nut...) and installs itself to the array (that's not ok). How can I change this?

Then another one: THe sme doesnt seem to recognise my Realtek 8169s-32 Gbit nic. Is this a known problem or just my inability How can I update the nic drivers?

Take out the raid card, setup your SMEServer then search on the forums to find the HowTo add additional drives, you have a slightly more difficult task in that you are adding a raid card but that shouldn't be a big issue.  Also you may be better letting Linux take care of the raid on the two drives dangling off the QTec controller, rather than messing with the the card.  I assume the card can act as a simple IDE expansion card?  W/O raid.

Do a search for Realtek 8169 and perhaps gigabyte that should reveal that other have these cards working and how they achieved it.

Ok with that hd-stuff, but... I really cannot find any useful tips (or actually anything) related to the REaltek 8169. I know this is somewhat patheric, but could you please guide me a bit more. I only found the bug tracker for the realtek problems and it stated "no solution" or something like that. I also downloaded the latest driver for the chipset from Realtek, but I really don't know anything about compiling it to the kernel

I can't get cheapo realtek gigabyte cards to work either.

I bought a tyan AMD dual gigbyte LAN mobo which works like a dream.

I really can't believe, that nobody here cannot help me (and others) in one way or other with this nasty 8169 problem. If the driver is included in the 2.6.x kernels (like I've found out), why doesn't any of the true gurus here know why it doesn't work with SME 7.x? I know that (at least it seems so) the 8169 is a real pain in the butt for number of Linux distros, but I haven't found any explanation why. And I would really be happy with a simple answer: has someone got it to work or not? And if someone has it working, how on earth did he do it?

That's because the RTL 8169 (Rev. 10) chipset identifies itself as an 8167 instead of an 8169, this type is also known as the 8169SC. (AFAIK)

The proper driver for it is the r1000. Serach the forum for    "8169SC" and see if that solution works for you.

As you may or may not know, SME is based on CentOS 4.X, which is based on RedHat 4.X.  If it doesn't work for RedHat, then it will not work with CentOS or SME.  Try looking for a solution based on RedHat 4.X.  Until the solution is found for RedHat and adopted, it will not be fixed in CentOS or SME.

Sorry but this is the simple truth.

update:
here is a link from the CentOS website.  Someone else has done the research.  The driver has not made it to the kernel yet.
