I'm pretty sure that's not enough ram to crack a flea on. Try more ram.

Did you bother to read the release notes that come with the CD or even the release notes on these forums ?

You need the i586 switch, which was implemented after 7RC2 (I think due to upgrade to Centos 4.3)

As far as low end hardware is concerned I have installed 7.0RC2 on a Pentium 166 with 64Mb OK. It runs as a home server so it's not doing very much. If I turn on clam antivirus, the thing almost grinds to a halt, but it still runs.
Changing anything in server manager takes about 5 minutes !!

I also just installed 7.0 final on a Pent 350 with 64Mb RAM and that is running as a live web server with 2 sites, although with little usage again.

If you go into another concole when the install freezes (alt+f2) or (alt+f3) what do you see on each of these consoles?  This will give some idea as to at what point the install stopped

I've installed  pre-release version of SME7 on to an old Pentium 233 based system, but I found that it was unusable with less that 128Mb of system RAM.

I guess I'm lucky my sites are on a quad xeon in the Sydney hub and not your machine :)

I've never had a problem installing SME on low spec machines. Other distros are a problem these days however.

I'm not saying that a P350 or P133/64Mb is a good thing, just that it does install (slowly) & run. I wouldn't hit either of those machines with a big email load.

I have another server that is P4 2.8G with 1Gb RAM, and the web site performance is little different on either machine. Apache runs fast no matter you put it on.

How about Clamscan?
My 3000+ AMD with 1gig ram has been running since Sunday 4am and won't stop till about Monday 10am with only 500gig to scan. Your 350 would take a month at least.

I know it installs on those old boxes but it's not feasable to run it as a production machine and it should be discouraged else you'll be plaiuged with crap bugs from faulty old equipment.

In order to install on i586 machines you will need to do the following:
1) Press shift while booting to get the boot menu
2) Type "smei586" at the boot prompt

I guess its horses for courses, and this is where SME shines...
I recently needed a gateway for a few workstations, just simple internet stuff + a couple of ibays. Had just pensionned off  an old 166 Compaq, and what the hell, gave it a try. Beefed up the memory to 256, fitted 2 (second hands) 8GB hdd and would you believe it, SME is running fine and serving 4 workstations + a sip phones with no problems at all.  And some welcome storage for backup of files with full RAID1 array.  Admittedly, accessing server manager is a pain, very slow (but not 5 minutes, thanks to 256 SDRAM). Command line is "sluguish" but OK. The users do not care, browsing and pop3 are fine - the SIP phones works also.
