Bare with this newbie....OS requirements???
« on: July 07, 2006, 07:18:29 PM »
I'm completely new to the both Servers and Linux.  I find myself here because I want to begin toying around with server setup and admin beginning by deploying a small server environment in my home.  I'm not totally unfamiliar with networking, however, I do admit I am learning the basics of servers now.

The system will be used for web hosting and as an email server.

I've had issues installing CentOS4 on the very old compaq I have (although its specs are viable based on the sites support info) and would like to know if the fedora project is a viable OS to use the SME Server on.

Thanks for your time.

SME is the server platform to be using especially if you're new to the notion of servers and Linux.  I started with SME several years back and got frustrated because it did everything that I needed.  So, if you're looking to learn Linux, you should probably try a distro like Fedora, Ubuntu, CentOS, Suse, etc...  These are great distros but not integrated and polished of a one-stop-shop as SME.  Print out the 6.01 manual and read it 2 or 3 times and you'll get a sense of how complete this server is.  If at any time you have questions, post back to this forum.

Good luck and have fun.

 ;-)

By the way, you don't need to install any OS before install SME.  SME is built from CentOS and is a self contained server.  You have to install it and everything is ready to go.

SME is an operating system, you do not need to install on top of another OS such as Fedora or CentOS, maybe the fact that SME7 is based on CentOS confused you?

What problems did you encounter installing CentOS on your Compaq hardware?  You may see similar problems when you try to install SME but we can get around most problems.

If you want an easy to setup and use server SME7 is for you.  But even better the expandability of SME grows as your knowledge grows.

I had a hunch about not having to install over the other mentioned OS's but as you accurately said, I was confused by the fact that SME is based on Centos 4.

Even though I'm new to this arena, just by reading the specs SME seems to be a very robust and capable server.  I have been very interested in using it since I started researching for this project.

I'll go ahead and dive into it and see where it leads.

Oh. Regarding the problems...Well it was stopping mid way telling me there was not enough room on the disk or the install disks were bad.  I'll try and load SME and see where it leads.

Thanks a bunch guys...

Oddly enough, unless you go poking around "under the hood" you won't learn much about Linux by installing SME; all the hard work is done for you and it "just works".
