Topic: Raid and move to another Server Upgrade

HI all
Basicaly my story is probably a common one, I used to use cent os as my router/fire wall/webserver etc but decided one day to have a look at this awesome looking sme server. I obvioulsy didnt want to use my main server so i found an idle p3 600 and bits to make a new one. Things went well
Very well and over the 2 week or so period i moved everything from my old server to my new fantastic sme server. This is all grand but i didnt put 2 drivces in the machine so am not mirroring also now i have all this on my server im out of horsepower so my questions

1, Can I build a new server (from my old centos server athlon2800+) backup my current p3 server and move plugs?
2, As all my spare drives are in my AMD server can i build and setup with one drive then move to raid 1 afterwards?
3, My network cards are in my sme server and i need one of them for my new server so how do i install as g/w/server with only 1 nic (i will have 2 but dont want to take my sme down till im up on new one)
4, Will a backup from old and restore to new make everything work contribs mysql dbs, files etc
5, I have another webserver on a different ip id ilke to consolidate into my new sme server can i make my public nic have 2 ip addresses?

Yes, but I'm not sure of your real question here. Do you mean restore the backup from P3 to athlon ?. If so, yes, but you will also need to re-install any add on apps.

Yes, use the admin console drive management option to add a second drive to the software RAID1

To use it as a gateway server you need 2 NICs, they are very cheap nowadays.
The machine will not have full functionality this way, but you can install the OS with only 1 NIC. When you plug another NIC in later it should get recognised.

No.  
You will need to re-install any add on apps, but mysql dbs will be restored (the standard backup does a dump of the mysql dbs), and all other settings, users, ibays & even config data for the apps will be restored.
That has always been the case with sme. Restore should ONLY be done to a clean install of the OS.
The only way to backup a fully configured drive, is to do a clone.

The sme server cannot have 2 public IPs, only one, and it doesn't need more than one anyway.
You can host as many domains on the web server as you want, just configure external DNS records to point 2 or more domains at the one main IP for the server & configure (virtual) domains on the server to manage them.

Basically then i build my nerver server from scratch with 1 hd and 1 nic and install a clean sme
add any contribs i am using
restore from backup of old machine (backup to desktop)
add second hd
add second nic

with regard to the mult ip question, i understnd i can host multiple sites with ibays and am currently doing this but my sme server does this. I have an old server that hosts another site (setup before i started on my still steep learning curve) that is on another ip. Its very dificult to get the dns changed, and would prefer to keep it on is current ip. SO can i add this ip or should i add another nic or should i just leave it seperate

You can only have one external IP on sme.
You can only have two NICs.

You will have to externally redirect that other IP to your servers IP.

Why even bother doing that though. Just change DNS to point that domain at your new servers IP, and forget the old IP even exists.

You can get free DNS service at zoneedit and do it yourself, you just need to get whoever originally setup that domain to point it at zoneedit nameservers. You get the nameserver details to use when you setup a domain at zoneedit.

ok i will try to get my isp to xhange my dns record as this was setup years ago. Any time i speak to them about it i have loads of greif

Have you actually set up zone edit? I am trying to do this but am having difficulty as I am NB.

I can probably change my system around so that Linksys router (which says they support Zoneedit) and put server in DMZ. But I was hoping to modify SME instead.

Any help would be appreciated
