Broken Raid
« on: July 21, 2006, 08:44:50 AM »
I had version 6 with identical ide mirrored drives but for some reason 1 quit updating. From info here I thought it best to make sure I had a backup and then update to 7 which I did.

I also deleted the old info on the 2nd master - is there a way to get the 2nd unit to mirror the 1st without a clean install?

I thought the server manager was supposed to now have some administrative function for managing the mirrored drives but I don't see it?

Thanks,
Ken Graham

It's not in server manager, it's in the admin console.
Log in as admin at the command prompt to see this

You might consider reading the manual too, you won't need to ask simple questions like this then.

Ken----
You can also type 'console' at the command prompt.
Those simple questions aren't simple to the people who ask them,
but they are made more simple by people who already know the
answer and are willing enough to pass on the now simple answer.
When the stress of getting your server back up and running has
diminished I can commend the wiki for some really useful reading:

I wasn't referring to "simple" in relation to Kens knowledge.
I was referring to basic questions that are covered in the manual, which is is indeed essential reading for anyone using sme server. Based on the nature of his question, it seemed that Ken had not read or absorbed the manual.

If he & others take the time to read the manual they would have this & many other basic questions answered & wouldn't need to ask, and I was pointing that out to Ken for his future benefit in much the same way that you pointed out the following link to FAQs.

I could "tongue in cheek" say why should Ken have to read the FAQs, he can ask those questions here and they can be answered by anyone in  these forums.
You & I know that that is a silly response, because there is a wealth of tips in the FAQ.
Ken & others should indeed read the manual & FAQs & lots of the other documentation on contribs.org, and that information may well be useful when he is setting up his server. Hey, it could even avoid him wasting his own time asking questions here that have easily available published answers.

I don't actually see a version 7 manual available. I do have version 5 printed out and could print 6 but it seems a bit late as I am in process of using 7. Correct me if I am wrong.  So at the risk of admitting I know too little about RAID here is what is happening.

I did delete 1 disk and moved it to a 2nd cable so both are primary as per recommendations I have found searching here.

I am not sure how come it thinks I have 3 unless it is counting the CDROM attached as a Slave?

On the good side of SME 7,

I do use a method of uploading large files (3 - 50 meg files or larger) to email using a Web page. The utility is called Soupermail and I found it worked equally well on 7 as it did at version 4. The advantage is email is checked regularly whereas something in a FTP list could easily be overlooked when a client sends me something.

No - the RAID layout is different between 6.0 and 7.0 and the console doesn't currently cope with it:

Maybe someone could place this line from the FAQs:

" Work is underway on a manual for SME Server 7. See the work in progress here: * SME7Manual - (temporary location) "

also under documentation in the main menu.

Suggestions for improvement to the website and for improvement to documentation should go into the Bug Tracker.

What this is showing is the thre partitions, /, /boot & swap are active on one disk of the raid set only.  If you were able to get the second drive made known to the raid software, it would be able to rebuild it as a raid1 (mirrored) pair.  I also need to do this, but I had to move a pair of hardware raid drives onto the ide 1 & 2 interfaces & I only got as far as upgrading the first drive.  Let us know how you get on!
