Topic: php.ini configuration

I need to change some of the php.ini settings. When I open /etc/php.ini to edit  it says that I need to modify the source template in /etc/e-smith/templates-custom. However there are no templates in this directory (hidden or otherwise). So how would I make permanent changes ro my php.ini file?
