Is this enough of a "business-class" server?
« on: July 27, 2006, 05:31:17 AM »
Hi, everyone. I have recently installed SMEServer 7.0 for my small business which currently only has 4 users. One of my customers is looking to me for suggestions in the server area. They are a local gov't agency with about 60 users. They need basic file serving, email hosting, web hosting services. Does SMEServer have "enough" to handle an organization of that size? I know some of that depends on the hardware that it is running on. I'd like to look into some kind of "Exchange-like" application to allow them some collaboration capabilities.

Thanks in advance for any replies.
Alvin

Of Coz! It can!!! I have around 45 user in the office. It works very fine. But I separate the server for web, email & file server. It just in case that one of the down, another can still keep running. Also I have setup the mrtg for monitoring as well :hammer: All my server just using pentium 1.7Ghz and already fast enough to run..

Better stick with 6 version for a while, because it has more addons and less bugs.

I disagree with that recommendation.

Unless you absolutely need a specific add on that has not yet been released, I would recommend going with sme7 for sure. All add ons are now only being developed for sme7, so if it doesn't exist yet, then it will very soon.
Most of the "popular/essential" add ons have already been rewritten to run OK on sme7.

There are so many improvements and added functionality built in to sme7, that sme6 did not have or needed lots of add ons to be installed to get the similar functionality.
Even where the functionality can be obtained in sme6 by add ons, that same functionality is generally greatly improved in sme7.

If you are doing a new install I would not use sme6 now.

OK! Thanks for the replies. Is there anything available for SMEServer to do some "Exchange-like" functionality? Or do I have to go with something like eGroupWare?

I would agree with RayMitchell on sme7. A lot of us ran 7 in a production environment for months before the production release.

I think eGroupWare is your best bet for collaboration. I don't know how much you have used this site or if you even need this information but there is a pretty good howto on eGroupWare here:

thanks to Stéphane  Gauvin

The howto is in english but the server panel language is French.

The server panel language is French or what ever you want...

Are you aware of critical bugs in the SME7? Did you report them to bugtracker?

Most of the popular add-on are either implemented in base SME (AV/SPAM/Secure mail etc..) or have versions adapted for SME7

I'm the IT manager for a local government and have been using the SME Server for over 5 years with about 120 users.  Can't say enough good things about it.  I highly recommend the latest version 7 release.  It's been doing a great job with filtering out spam.  As you said make sure you don't go too cheap on hardware.

.. pick up a s/h Compaq or Dell ex departmental server (not one of the cheap basic ones) from eBay; nice & robust and will work outta da box with SME 7.

I prefer the Compaq/HP range & would use a DL380 G3, ML370 G3, ML530 G2 or better; the bigger ones can take more drives and do two channel RAID 10 in hardware (with the right spec).

These servers are dirt cheap compared to what they cost new & will prob run for years without a drama for a very moderate budget.
