How do you get to the root.
I have enable telnet and can not login as root.
What is the default pasword??
It's not the same as admin.

I use ssh rather than telnet....however, I log in as root with my admin password.  Works everytime all the time.

Might try ssh....could be a security issue?  What error do you get?

You also might want to double check your security setting through the server-manager web pages.

The root password is the same as the admin password.  However, you aren't allowed to log in remotely as root via telnet.  Use ssh instead--there are free ssh clients available for most environments.

You can no longer login as root by telnet. Use a ssh client (e.g. putty, which works fine for me) and use your admin password for root.

This has nothing to do with the telnet-related settings in the admin.web-panel; you are by no means allowed to login as root via telnet.

Recent releases (4.1 and up, or thereabouts) do not allow you to enable root telnet logins via the web manager. However, if you check out the telnet templates you will find the configuration file property for the telnet service that does allow root logins. You have to set this via the command line using the db command.

Why not just use SSH ?

If not an option telent in as a normal user and 'su' to root ....

SSH should _always_ be an option, particularly with how insecure telnet is.  If you can't carry putty on a floppy with you (it's a single .exe file, that's all), use mindterm as a java applet--nothing to install on the client computer at all.  There's really no excuse to use telnet any more.

I believe the decision to use or not use telnet is best left to the individual user. Some may not like it, and it is indeed insecure, but if we "outlaw" everything that is insecure or unreliable or "could" be a problem, we'd be left with hunks of metal, plastic, and silicon.

And should Mitel ever elect to completely remove telnet from SME, then I suspect the solution for those wanting telnet should be to not use SME, but rather to use a product that will allow them to work they way they want. Or, wait for the contrib module that reinstates telnet
