SME = BDC of Windows Domain But when PDC down no access ?
« on: August 30, 2006, 07:40:20 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I want to know if it's possible to be able to access a SME share when the PDC (My Windows domain controler) was down ??? My SME Server was setup like a BDC (Backup Domain Controler) for my PDC domain... So when I shutdown the primary (for any reason) my user's have no access to the Samba SME share's... Any idea to resolve it ?

Thanks,

Snoopyski

PS. I no the best solution is to power up the PDC !!!  :-D

How did you setup your SME server as a BDC?

In a Windows domain your PDC should be the machine which runs 24/7.

If you want to take the machine running as your PDC offline do you really need run a Windows domain?

Yes Yes I know... But my situation look like that:

Site#1(WindowsServer in PDC mode)==>ADSL<==Site#2(SME Server in BDC mode)

So when the link (ADSL) was down... All my computer's in the site#2 cannot have access to SME share... Because the SME Server cannot reach the Domain Controler...

This is my situation... Any Idea ?

Thanks,

What actions did you take to create SME Server as a BDC? Did you read this article from the Samba FAQ? This states that is is impossible... sorry!

It might be possible between two SME Servers, maybe it is an option to add a second SME Server on the NT side and releave the Windows PDC from it's PDC fuction in favour of SME Server. You can if you like still use the NT server as fileserver.
