Raid 1 Fresh SME 7 Install
« on: September 14, 2006, 07:36:41 PM »
Hey

I need to incorporate a Raid 1 mirroring solution on a fresh SME 7 install.

I have 2 x 80gb IDE drives with no Raid controller, is software Raid possible with SME7?

On the initial setup I found no options for Raid.

Thanks

Phil

Hard disk configuration is automated, see
http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/SME%207%20Features

Connect the two identical size drives to your Primary & Secondary channels and sme7 will configure it as software RAID1

You can even do a single disk install, and add the second disk later using the admin console menus. A single disk install is configured as a degraded software RAID1, that's why the second disk can be added later.
The ability to add the second disk later (and have it automatically added to the RAID array) only applies to fresh clean installs of sme7 and not to upgrades from sme6.x. The partitions are different between sme6 & sme7, and the initial release of sme7 did not support partition reconfiguration & therefore the auto add function does not work for upgraded machines.

I think the developers are planning to add that functionality to a later release (7.1 ?).

Yes, SME7 supports software raid-1.

See the administration FAQ

If I install SME on a computer with two hard drives, did it recognize them and use both?
At the time of SME installation or update, there should be only one disc, or two identical discs which will be used in mirroring (software RAID-1). All the other disc must be disconnected.
If you have two discs and you have not selected the software RAID, the second disc partitions table will be rewritten. What installation will do with the second disc is not definite.

That's an old FAQ more applicable to sme6 than sme7

Thanks guys, I am new to SME / Linux, I tried fiddling with Fedora Core but found SME to be the easiest to configure.

Had some teething troubles though, I forwarded port 80 and 3398 for Remote Desktop, I sat trying to figure out why the webserver wasn't working, then realised port 80 is for http :)

Thanks again ;)
