VPN - Newbie
« on: October 02, 2006, 08:40:09 PM »
I'm back with SMEserver after a long break.  There was an issue with my mylex raid controller. I now use s/w raid1 with 2 250 Gig ATA's.

I want to be able to access the server from my laptop when traveling. VPN sounds to be the right way.

The server is in Server mode only and sits behind a Trend wireless/modem/router.

Laptop runs windows 2000.

Questions:

1) Which settings do I need set on the server? - I have set the user as a VPN client.
2) Which ports do I need to forward from the router in the firewall rules?
3) Will I need any additional software on the laptop or is the built in networking wizard sufficient?

Thanks for any assistance and suggestions.

Simon.

Hi,

A search on google found this:

Quote
PPTP uses TCP port 1723 to establish a connection. When opening holes in a firewall to support PPTP, one must be careful to not specify UDP port 1723 instead of TCP.
