Can't use domain name to check email in Intranet
« on: October 03, 2006, 03:43:53 AM »
Hi!

I've almost complete all the server setting in SME Server. I've got some problem with the mail server domain name.

Intranet
- I can't use mail.abc.com to check mail, but I can use my computer hostname(\\myserver) or IP(192.168.1.2) to check POP3 mail as well as Web mail(https://192.168.1.2/webmail/).

Internet
- I can check mail by the domain name mail.abc.com

My found out
- When I can my client computer's DNS server to 192.168.1.2, everything work fine!

Some settings:
- I've change the DNS Server forward address, it will forward all mail.abc.com to my SME Server IP.
- Domain DNS servers settings in SME Server is "Resolve locally" is that correct?
- My router already using DMZ function to map all the port to 192.168.1.2

Problem
- I prefer to use my orginial DNS Server instead of using SME Server be my DNS Server.

Ultimately it will be better if you configure your system to use sme server DNS server, it works very well and in many (most) cases is better than external DNS servers. It does lookup the external root DNS servers.

If you must use a different DNS server, then configure sme to use it. Login as admin, run Configure this server, and in one of the screens enter the IP address of the external DNS server.

Thank you very much! That mean's I better use SME Server be my DNS Server right? Actually, I'm afraid it will add more effort to SME Server if it is being the DNS Server also....I don't know whether it is true or not.

BTW, should I choose "Resolve locally" in the DNS Server setting at SME Server? Thank for your kindly help  :D

Yes, so you don't need to do anything if you have not already changed the setting in sme, your workstations would usually automatically configure themselves to use sme as DNS server, unless you manually configure them.

Unless you have hundreds or thousands of users making non stop requests, then I don't think you will notice any performance issue.

Usually just accept the default setting as that will be appropriate.
