Backup Tape problems
« on: October 04, 2006, 06:26:54 PM »
I just installed SME 7.0. Everything works fine except the backup tape. It fails everytime. The drive is a Seagate STT38000A IDE 8Gig drive. Can someone tell me how to fix this? I am new to Linux, so please be very descriptive. Thanks for the help.

I'd love to help, but you have not left enough info to make it easy on anybody.  Here are a few questions

Is the Seagate drive New and none to work properly.  If it's a travan I wuld suggest you toss it now and get something designed to actually work for more than 90 days.

How do you know the backup fails?

Are there any error messages?

If so, what are the error messages.

I could be wrong, but if not mistaken, SME is setup by default to use SCSI tapes by default.  I do think there are people who modified it to use IDE drives.  If your a newbie, you might not want to "get under the hood"

Also, I support dozens of servers for a living.  I stopped using tape drives years ago.  They are slower, more expensive, and less reliable than using an additional hardisk locally, or on a workstation.

Good luck, I hope you find a solution.  Email back and I'll try to assist!
